These past few weeks, I have been working on a painting of a koi pond. The piece has been very experimental, which I believe has provided me with a lot of opportunity to learn and mature. The piece has yet to feel resolved to me, but I am hoping to put on some final touches to make this learning step piece still feel resolved. I like painting and nature, but often feel stressed and strict in the way I try to capture the animals and landscapes that I paint. In this painting, I decided to try something more loose. I used some abstract techniques to portray a scene. I still have struggled with confident mark making in this piece, but the added freedom of being more abstract has allowed me to just simply go over what I didn't like with a lot more ease. This added ease has also allowed me to greatly improve my choice of colors, as seen in the progression of the lily pads. I see this piece as a useful step in my art, and while I still feel I haven't resolved it, I am fairly happy with it.
