Theodora Miller is a Richmond based artist who immigrated from Greece. She creates a variety of work, such as textiles and paintings, and discussed her meditative art in a zoom lecture for my school. Miller goes into great detail as to how she has used art as an outlet. You can see the emotion and subconscious motifs put into her pieces as she healed from a severe head trauma. Later, she discusses her pieces of greek writing, and how she would methodically paint the blocks of color to distract her mind from the stresses in her life. I really liked listening to Theodora talk about her abstract paintings and reason for creating. I have thought the idea of just releasing your emotion onto a canvas sounded really nice since our abstract expressionist unit in Art 3, but never got around to doing it. After listening to her, I think I want to buy a big canvas and just periodically release emotion onto it. I also really appreciated her short sentiment on how sometimes she gets upset and regrets painting over something, but then just lets it go and continues. I actually struggled with this on the piece I am currently working on, and it is refreshing hearing such a skilled artist talk about it.
